Will an Air Purifier Help with Pet Odors?

HEPA air purifiers can be a great solution for removing pet odors, allergens, pet dander, and other harmful substances from the air that can affect your health and odor inside your home. If your biggest problem is smaller pet hairs that move, you'll want to have a fine mesh filter that traps these hairs without them getting stuck. While this won't trap the hair that's lodged on your carpet or sofa (try a handheld vacuum for that), but it's a starting point. To reduce pet dander, air purifiers can be very effective devices, especially those with a HEPA filter.

This type of filter cleans the air and removes super-tiny particles, as small as 0.3 microns, that are smaller than pet dander (5-10 microns) on average. An air purifier can do a lot to eliminate odors, including those from dogs, if it has an adsorption filter, the most popular being activated carbon. Without this filter, HEPA alone will not be able to eliminate dog odors or any other odors in the home. Activated carbon is carbon that has been treated with high heat and works by trapping odors and has been shown to be effective for odors and has been demonstrated in multiple peer review studies. The Blueair 211+ uses a filter system they call “HEPA Silent”, which is a combination of HEPA and activated carbon filter with an electrostatic charge that allows better performance than purely mechanical filter systems. The air purifier works best in small rooms up to 219 square feet, and its compact size (8.7 x 8.7 x 14.2 inches) means it won't take up too much floor space.

While most air purifiers work only on pet dander, the Alen Breathesmart Classic claims that it also filters pet hair from the air, which could prevent it from falling on your furniture, carpets, and clothing. If you see an air purifier labeled as having a True HEPA filter, it means that the filter complies with the U. S. Department of Energy's standards for removing 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger from the air passing through it. The Lasko HEPA filter room air purifier has a true HEPA filter and a carbon-activated filter that traps 99.7% of contaminants in the air.

Many air purifiers also have HEPA filters because they're designed for people with allergies, so you'll get the added benefit of having fewer air pollutants and reducing smelly odors. Air purifiers are a great way to eliminate pet odors and reduce the amount of hair that floats in the air. It has two levels of filtration, an activated carbon filter for pet odors and a HEPA filter for small particles, and uses the brand's Air Multiplier technology to circulate clean air throughout the room. But the best pet air purifiers capture everything, including dander, pet-related allergens, and clumps of loose hair. Choose an air purifier that eliminates odors, cleans the air efficiently, is of a size that can fit in your room, is quiet enough to be placed in a bedroom, and is the most cost-effective for you. These are used in addition to the HEPA filter section and the remaining microscopic particles, such as dust mites, airborne microbes, dog dander and other particles, are permanently removed from the air.

You can also choose one of several custom filters to add to your device, including a pet allergy filter and an odor filter, depending on which filter is most common in your home. Being cylindrical, the air inlet is located near the bottom of the unit, with clean air emitting from the top.
